New Police Commissioner Amitabh Dhillon, who has promised to make the system more effective assuring prompt response to complaints regarding law and order, has a tough task ahead. Another case of abduction and rape has surfaced in the district.

Dhillon has replaced Hanif Qureshi following the gangrape that shocked the city recently. Interacting with mediapersons on Friday, Dhillon said efforts would be made to improve the law and order situation in the city and bring down the crime rate considerably. He added that the police would ensure that every incident brought to their notice is dealt with sternly.

Dhillon said CCTV cameras would be installed at sensitive points (around liquor vends) in the city and other parts of the district.

Claiming that the police would function in an unbiased manner, the new Commissioner said more police personnel would be deployed in sensitive areas. The department is facing acute shortage of manpower. Against the sanctioned strength of 5,200 officials, the department has 3,200.

Dhillon said SHOs and crime branch cells had been instructed to keep an eye on anti-social elements.
