New Delhi, October 8

Expressing concern over digital divide resulting in virtual denial of right to education to children belonging to the economically weaker section (EWS), who could not afford electronic gadgets and internet connection for online classes during Covid-19, the Supreme Court on Friday asked the Delhi Government to develop a plan to help them.

A Bench led by Justice DY Chandrachud said the Centre and state governments should jointly work to develop a lasting solution to ensure children were not denied education due to lack of resources.

Terming the consequences of the pandemic as “stark”, the Bench said, “The needs of such children who are the future of the country can’t be ignored.”
