AMRITSAR: The city police arrested nine persons, including two women, for allegedly trafficking drugs and sedated pills in separate incidents here on Tuesday.

The city police arrested nine persons, including two women, for allegedly trafficking drugs and sedated pills in separate incidents here on Tuesday. The police seized over 2,000 of intoxicants, 40 gm of heroin and 250 gm of opium, besides drug money of around Rs 17,000 from their possession. The police also arrested a woman bootlegger from the Maqboolpura area.

In first case, the arrested trio has been identified as Sahib Singh, Major Singh and Jyoti, all residents of Maqboolpura. The police confiscated 10 gm of heroin and 900 intoxicant tablets from them.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Palwinder Singh said the three had several cases registered against them under the NDPS Act and they were currently on bail. Jyoti’s brother Happy was already serving 10-year jail term under the similar offence while her mother Sawinder Kaur and Happy’s wife Rajni were also lodged in Central Jail for possessing drugs.

Similarly, the Maqboolpura police arrested Navjot Singh of Fatehgarh Churian (now in Maqboolpura) with 10 gm of heroin and Rs 13,900 in cash, suspected to be drug money, and a mobile phone. The police also nabbed Deepak Singh, alias Ganja of Mehta Road, with 866 sedative pills and Rs 2,990.

Similarly, the police nabbed Vikramjit Singh and his mother Ranjit Kaur of New Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar for allegedly possessing 300 intoxicant tablets. They were travelling on a scooter when they were intercepted in the Division B police station area. The Division B police held Anuj Kumar, alias Gori of Chamrang Road, and recovered 20 gm of heroin from him. In another incident, the police arrested Vinod Verma of Bhagtanwala with 250 gm of opium.

Meanwhile, the Maqboolpura police arrested a woman bootlegger, identified as Ranjit Kaur, while her husband Jinder managed to escape. The police confiscated 40 bottles of illicit liquor and Rs 1.10 lakh from their residence during a raid.
