The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a show-cause notice to the MC Commissioner over non-lifting of garbage from a market in Sector 70 here. The official has been asked to explain as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him by October 12.

Gurkirpal Singh Mann had filed a civil writ petition in the HC stating that cow dung and garbage were being thrown in front of showrooms in Sector 70 and the same was not being cleared by the Mohali MC.

On May 1, the High Court had directed the DC to take action within four weeks. However, nothing was done and the order was modified to issue the same directions to the MC Commissioner. However, Mann’s counsel told the court that still nothing had been done. Hence, the HC issued the show-cause notice.

The space, which is close to Vivek High School and belongs to GMADA, was being used to dump cow dung by some residents of Mataur, garbage by waste collectors and construction debris by some local shopkeepers, claimed Mann.
