Shifting vendors in Sector 22 to the rooftop of shops in the market in order to reduce chaos, launching an App for car pooling and building ramps for uninterrupted cycling are some of the suggestions residents from different walks of life presented before the Smart City Mission CEO and officials here today.

Participants displayed and presented their proposals at the Sector 10 museum. One of the participants, Sukumar Jeirath, an architect, suggested all vendors sitting in front of Kiran Cinema in Sector 22, should be shifted to the rooftops of shops.

Vendors, mostly unregistered ones, are dotting the parking lot, pedestrian walk area and verandhas outside shops, leaving little space for vehicle parking and blocking the way.

Learning from his own experience, another participant Sunil Sekhri told the smart city officials, “I come from Panchkula to Chandigarh and I see about 90 per cent of cars have only person inside. On the lines of Apps run by various cabs, we can have a vehicle sharing App here. It should have routes like Panchkula-Chandigarh, Mohali-Chandigarh and so on. I am sure many people will prefer it. Many cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai have it running successfully. It needs motivation.”

It is aimed at cutting traffic rush, saving fuel and environment, curbing air and noise pollution, he added.

To improve public transport, participants also suggested to have a total of 11 bus routes only. It will increase the frequency of buses to further encourage more and more people opt for buses. There should also be a common ticketing system through recharge for all buses, as per a suggestion made to the Smart City team.

For seamless cycling experience, it was suggested that there should be ramps near rotaries and traffic light junctions. It was also suggested to have colour coding and number coding for all vendors.

Smart City General Manager NP Sharma said, “We have invited suggestions from people. We will see the feasibility of all projects and will implement that are possible to do.”
