UT cops took bribe, tweets J&K resident

A resident of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) took to Twitter to highlight an incident involving Chandigarh traffic cops, who allegedly took Rs 500 as bribe from him during his visit to the city. The UT police have initiated an investigation into the allegation.

The complainant, Rakesh Gupta, posted a series of tweets to narrate the incident. The SSP (Traffic) was also tagged in the tweets.

Gupta alleged that while returning from Solan on August 9, he drove through Chandigarh. He claimed that he was stopped by cops at a traffic light point for jumping a red light, even though, he claimed, he had not committed the offence.

Gupta claimed that cops asked him to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 and that his driving licence would be suspended. “They also told me that I have to visit the District Courts to pay the fine,” Gupta said. 

Gupta alleged that a head constable at the spot told him to go towards the roadside and speak to a constable. “Since I am from J&K, I thought I will be harassed if I have to visit Chandigarh to pay the fine for an offence, which I didn’t even commit. So I gave Rs 500 to the cops and they allowed me to go,” Gupta added.

He returned home, but could not contact the UT traffic police since internet was not working and calls could not be made from there. 

“I got access to WiFi  around two days ago, following which I tweeted the matter to the UT police,” he added. 

The names of both the cops have also been mentioned in the tweet.

Traffic police officials had asked Gupta to send a complaint on email, following which an investigation had been initiated.

Police officials said DSP Harjit Kaur was asked to enquire into the matter and submit a report.
