The Lambra police claimed to have solved the murder and rape case of a 26-year-old woman with the arrest of an auto-rickshaw driver here today.
The woman, a nurse by profession, took an auto to a Khambra-based church to celebrate Christmas on December 25 last year.
Surinder Pal Dhogri, DSP (Detective), Jalandhar Rural, said the suspect had been identified as Prince, a resident of Model House.
As per the police, the auto driver reportedly tried to target three more girls in the past, but could not succeed.
Kuldeep Singh, former sarpanch of Tarar village, informed the police on December 26 last year that the body of an unidentified woman was lying on the roadside from Gadowali village to Tarar.
After getting information, the Lambra police reached the spot and registered a case under Sections 302 and 201 on the IPC on December 26. During investigation, the woman was identified as a resident of Dhaulowal in Gurdaspur. The police later added Section 376 of the IPC to the FIR.
As per the police, the woman took the auto to a Khambra church on December 25. The auto driver took her to a secluded area and tried to make sexual advances. The woman raised alarm. However, the suspect overpowered her and strangled
her to death with a dupatta. The inebriated auto driver later raped her corpse and abandoned the body in the area.
The woman, who was working as a nurse at a Jalandhar-based private hospital, came to stay with her sister around a fortnight ago.
Inspector Jatinder Kumar, SHO of the Lambra police station, said: “The auto driver violated the woman’s body after the murder. After some time, he again came to the spot and raped the body”.
