Moga, January 19
A 30-year-old woman was brutally murdered allegedly by a migrant man after she resisted rape at Duneke village in Moga city on Tuesday.
Local police officials said the woman hailing from nearby Singhawala village had separated from her husband a few months ago and had been living in a rented accommodation with her six-year-old daughter at Duneke village.
The victim’s mother told the police they belonged to a poor family and that her daughter ran a salon in Moga city to earn a livelihood.
On Monday, she had gone to meet her daughter and decided to stay back. In the morning, when she went to the bathroom, she heard cries of her daughter. “I rushed inside my daughter’s room and found a man trying to rape her. As she resisted his attempts, he took out a knife and slashed her neck, killing her on the spot. I cried for help and some neighbours rushed in. However, the suspect had fled by then,” she told the police.
DSP (City) Ramandeep Singh Bhullar and City-I police station SHO Jaswant Singh visited the spot and later sent the body to the district hospital for post-mortem.
During preliminary investigations, the police identified the suspect as Sanjit Ram from the Gobindpur Vaishali area of Hajipur district in Bihar. He lived in the same building and had allegedly been harassing her for some time.
The suspect was arrested and an FIR under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC registered at the City-I police station. He would be produced in a local court tomorrow. The knife used in the crime has been recovered from the scene. The body was handed over to the victim’s mother after the post-mortem, which established death due to grievous injuries to the neck with a sharp weapon.
