The Municipal Corporation (MC) elections for the post of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held on January 23. MC Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Khaira today confirmed the same to The Tribune.

MC officials have prepared the agenda which is being forwarded to all elected councillors. The corporation is required to prepare the agenda and present copies of the same to all members at least 72 hours before the commencement of the meeting. The meeting will be held by Divisional Commissioner VK Meena. The MC Commissioner will be present throughout the meeting.

Khaira said, “The agenda has been prepared and it is being sent to all members. The meeting for the elections of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held by the Divisional Commissioner on January 23.”

The members today confirmed that they had received the agenda letter from the MC. A meeting of Congress party councillors will be held by Cabinet Minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot at Circuit House on January 22. Sanjeev Sharma Bittu, councillor elected without opposition from ward no. 42, said “All elected members from the party will present their support to respective members during the meeting.”

Process of election:

The MC prepares the agenda and presents a copy of the same to all elected 60 members at least 72 hours before the commencement of the meeting. The meeting will begin with the oath-taking-ceremony. Followed by the ceremony, councillors will propose names of various members for respective posts. The election process will come to an end if members are elected unopposed, else a voting will take place during the meeting.

The Patiala MC elections were held on December 17. Out of 60 seats in the corporation, the Congress party attained 59 seats, while the remaining one seat from ward no. 37 went to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ramanpreet Kaur after by-election in the ward.
