Chandigarh, August 12

In a major relief to Dadu Majra residents, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has decided to remove heaps of garbage from the dumping ground and convert it into its original look.

The MC has invited Expression of Interest (EOI) from companies. In the EOI, the civic body has proposed to earn money from the disposal of garbage.

MC Additional Commissioner Saurabh Mishra said once the project starts, it would be a win-win situation for both MC and residents residing nearby.

He said the civic body had proposed to handover the work to the firm, which will pay to the MC for the disposal of garbage. Once the entire garbage is lifted from the dumping ground, residents will heave a sigh of relief. The agency would be given the task to manage the dumping ground on a long-term basis.

The dumping ground is filled with garbage to its capacity, making the life of Dadu Majra residents miserable.

The residents said the stench emanating from the dumping ground has become unbearable over the years.

Dyal Krishan, a social worker of the area, said the waste dumped around was adversely affecting their health too. The residential colony, Dadu Majra, is situated very close to the city’s biggest garbage dump spread across 46 acres.

He said as plant was not working up to its full capacity, the garbage clutter with mosquitoes and flies hovering over it also poses the threat of spreading of diseases in the locality. The area is full of patients suffering from chronic respiratory and skin diseases due to the constant exposure to foul smell.
