The state government has changed the name of Mustafabad town in the district to Saraswati Nagar. A gazette notification was issued in this regard on February 2.

Although Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had announced to change the name of the town at Sadhaura on March 30, 2015, the gram panchayat of Mustafabad had passed a resolution in this regard on November 30, 2014.

The change in name was mooted after the excavation work of the river began on April 21, 2015.

According to government records, the town was popularly known as ‘Saraswati Tirth’. It is believed that an old dried-up river bed still exists near the town.

Dr SS Phulia, Deputy Commissioner (DC), said all round development of the town would be undertaken to ensure that it becomes a tourist attraction.

Welcoming the state government’s decision, Darshan Lal Jain, president of the Sarasvati Shodh Sansthan, said the move would help boost tourism in the region.
