Chandigarh, April 15

It is often thought that robotics and engineering are meant for college students only. The notion was challenged by school students who came together to compete at ‘Techno-Genius’, an inter-school robotics championship, at the PEC University of Technology.

Students from across the tricity spent the entire day on the campus. They were given a four-hour training in robotics which was followed by an intense competition. The students were asked to create a line-following robot and were then judged based on time taken, accuracy and the perfection achieved in creating a robot.

The competition was organised by teh IEEE PEC in association with Chandigarh-based RoboChamps India. The IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organisation dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. RoboChamps India has been working to bring robotics education to the students of the country.

The event was attended not only by students, but also by teachers, school authorities and various organisation members. It was supported by SchoolPad, a technology based company that builds school management software, Little App, one of the country’s largest deals discovery platform as well as Sweetheart Perfumes, a well-known brand dealing in popular fragrances.

The prizes were bagged by teams from Learning Paths, Mohali; KB DAV-7 and Bhavan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh, in the junior category and students from The Millenium School, Bathinda, secured the first position, St Joseph and Learning Paths stood second and Bhavan Vidyalaya and Strawberry Fields High School bagged the third position.

Nikhil Arora, chairperson, IEEE PEC, said: “The event aimed at introducing basic electronics at a young age. With the current pace of technology, it is most important that school students get exposed to electronics and technology.”
