INDIAN ECONOMIC PROGRESS

SIR M Visveswaraya, who presided over the Indian Economic Conference held at Bombay a few days ago, made a very important pronouncement on the economic progress in India. The entire address was devoted to the question of increasing the productive wealth of India and improving the economic conditions of Indians. Sir Visveswaraya is a famous engineer who, after serving in the Bombay Presidency with distinction, devoted his time and energies to studying the economic and social conditions of the people and suggesting means for improving them. He has travelled extensively in Europe, America and Japan and being impressed with the rapid progress made by people elsewhere, has been advocating measures for effecting similar progress in India. As Dewan of Mysore, he adopted some of the schemes he had since been advocating for the country generally and we understand that the State has been materially benefited by his schemes and several industries he established there have been in a flourishing condition. His opinions, therefore, deserve to be considered with the respectful attention due to the utterances of one who combines great practical experience with great theoretical knowledge. Sir Visveswaraya compared the economic conditions in India with those in Canada and Japan and pointed out that these two countries were organised in terms of production of greater wealth from year to year, whereas India was not so organised and this fact chiefly accounted for the great disparity between their respective conditions.
