Amritsar, January 27

Farmers under the banner of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) took out a tractor parade in the city on Republic Day to exhort people to come forward to save ‘kisan’ and ‘savidan’ here. Leaders of the farmers stated that the Constitution of the country has been threatened by the fascist forces. Similarly, the agriculture sector is under threat due to pro-corporate sector policies of the government.

The farmers started the tractor parade from Company Bagh, which passed through the Mall Road and other areas, before culminating at Rialto Chowk. The farmer leaders stated that though the SKM had ended its protest at Delhi borders after the government accepted its demands, none of which have been fulfilled so far.

Leaders of the various farmer unions, including Dr Satnam Singh Ajnala, Jatinder Singh Chhina, Lakhbir Singh Nizampur, Dhanwant Singh Khatrai Kalan, Manjit Singh Basarke, Sucha Singh Ajnala and others stated that the purpose of the protest was to unite public against the policies of the BJP-led Central Government and save the democratic, secular, federal structure enshrined in the Constitution.

The SKM also demanded the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report, legal guarantee for MSP, and removal of BJP leader Ajay Mishra Teni from the Union Cabinet, justice in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, cancellation of all FIRs registered against farmer activists who participated in the Delhi protest.
