Husband booked for dowry harassment

MOHALI:The Mohali police have booked a person for harassing his wife, who is settled in Canada, for dowry here.

Mohali, August 12

The Mohali police have booked a person for harassing his wife, who is settled in Canada, for dowry here.

Inspector Manphul Singh, SHO of the Balongi police station, said the accused, Gurinderjit Singh, a resident of Sector 79, here, got married to Poonam Singh last year.

The SHO said a complaint was made by Poonam Singh’s father Gurmail Singh. The girl’s father alleged that Gurinderjit Singh, who was his (Gurmail) son’s friend, had come into contact with Poonam when he was residing in the USA. He alleged that later Gurinderjit came to India and the marriage was solemnised here. “Gurinderjit had told Poonam that he would also settle in Canada after the marriage. Later his behaviour changed and he started harassing my daughter,” alleged Gurmail.

He alleged that Poonam left the country after some time, but Gurinderjit did not go and now he and his family laid a condition that he (Gurinderjit) would go to Canada only if they would be given Rs 25 lakh.

A case under Section 498-A of the IPC has been registered against Gurinderjit. — TNS
