The stray cattle menace continues to rock the Municipal Council as the Opposition urged the MC President Rajneesh Kumar Mittal to stop the payment to a gaushala as it had failed to deal with the menace.

The MC had passed a resolution to pay Rs 1 lakh to the gaushala about eight months ago, but after receiving criticism from the Opposition, the MC has decided to stop the payment to the gaushala authorities. The MC has also decided to issue show-cause notice to the gaushala.

SAD councillor and former president Gursewak Singh Golu said there was no improvement in the situation as not a single animal had been caught by the gaushala authorities. He said due to this menace, accidents were being reported almost daily, especially during night hours. He said recently, a goods train coming from Ambala and proceeding towards Suratgarh had derailed after its engine hit a stray animal.

He said they had raised the issue in the MC meeting held and it was unanimously decided to discontinue the practice of paying Rs 1 lakh to the gaushala, which had failed to carry out its task. He said the MC authorities should ask the gaushala authorities to refund the amount, besides issuing show-cause notice.

It is pertinent to mention here that the gaushala near Duladi gate in the town houses about 600 animals while another centre opened by the Nabha Gaushala Committee at Vazidpur also houses around 500 animals.

Despite repeated calls and messages by this reporter, the MC President could not be contacted.
