Teachers associated with Punjabi University Contractual Teachers’ Association (PUCTA) lifted their two-day strike against the delay in release of their salaries and other demands on Tuesday.

The teachers said they have been given an assurance of release of salaries within two days. Nearly, 120 contractual teachers of 14 colleges under the University have been on strike demanding regularisation, among other demands.

One of the contractual teachers, Pushpinder Singh from University College, Ghanaur, said, the teachers held a meeting with the university officials who assured them of immediate action regarding the matter.

He said, “We have lifted the strike after officials assured that the committee formalised to look into the matter. They will decide upon the increase in salary and yearly increment by Friday this week.”

In May, the teachers had boycotted semester exams after which the university officials were forced to make alternate arrangements with the help of principals of the colleges.

The contractual teachers said if the officials would fail to take any positive steps they would begin their strike from Friday.
