A Delhi Police head constable, Ram Avtar was shot dead allegedly by unidentified men at Jaitpur here, where he resided, said a senior police officer. Avtar was posted as head constable at south Delhi's Ambedkar Nagar Police Station, they said.

The incident took place Tuesday night at 11.30 pm, when he was going to a shop near his house. Police control room received a call at Jaitpur Police Station regarding the policeman lying unconscious on the road and he was initially taken to Dev Medical. Another PCR call was received where the caller suspected bullet injury to the injured policeman. On which, police then took the victim to Apollo Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, said police.

The deceased sustained a bullet injury below the ribs on right side, they said.

According to DCP Chinmoy Biswal, on September 11, the deceased reached his house at 9.30 pm, went out to buy household article, when he was shot dead by unknown assailants. A murder case with Arms Act has been registered at Jaitpur Police Station and investigation has been taken up.

The place of the occurrence has been inspected by the crime and forensic teams. Intelligence is being gathered and budding criminals and ruffians are being questioned, the DCP said.

The post-mortem of the deceased was conducted at AIIMS and the body has been handed over to his family members. Personal enmity angles are being investigated too, DCP Biswal added.
