New Delhi, February 16

Detection is the biggest deterrent in crime prevention, said Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the 71st raising day parade at New Police Lines today.

A criminal’s biggest fear is getting caught. “We have to ensure that no criminal should feel that he is beyond the reach of the Delhi Police”, said the Home Minister.

The minister applauded the Delhi Police on apprehending the Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist, Ariz Khan, alias Junaid, who had been on the run since the 2008 Batla House encounter.

He felt proud that the police nabbed kidnapers who abducted a five-year-old boy on the Republic Day eve, without being hurt and the way police handled the revolt against Bollywood movie “Padmavat” in the city.

He greeted the department on managing the security during the Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN).

He said countrymen see Delhi Police not just as a state police but police of the entire nation, as Delhi is the capital of the nation.

The Home Minster also announced a donation of Rs 5 crore in the martyrs’ fund of the Delhi Police.

He said in coming days the force will have a forensic laboratory ready.

The Commissioner of Police, Amulya Patnaik on the occasion spoke about the challenges faced by the force in 2017. He said heinous crime has come down to 22 per cent and crime against women has decreased in the capital with rape and molestation cases have reported a drop in Delhi claiming that their “innovative preventive steps” have resulted in the “positive” change.

Focusing on woman officials’ presence in the police stations he said it has been ensured that every police station in the city has woman officials and for the first time woman beat officers have been posted in the police stations.

The department has also the revamped “Himmat Plus” app for women who are vulnerable while travelling as when they board a taxi or an auto-rickshaw they do not know if it is safe. This upgraded app will definitely empower them and boost their confidence while travelling.

The revamped app comes in English and Hindi and has a special feature for scanning the QR codes of taxi, auto-rickshaw and e-rickshaw drivers to verify their details, he said.
