Srinagar, December 9

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president GA Mir today flayed the state government over power shortage in the Valley.

“Despite severe cold, the Kashmir valley is going through the worst power crisis in recent years. Even in metered areas, power supply remains cut for at least six hours in a day. The condition in non-metered areas is even worse. I want to ask the government what is the reason for this huge curtailment,” Mir said in a statement. “Winter is not new in Kashmir and neither there is a decrease in power generation. But why is the curtailment schedule so long this year? It seems that under the garb of unrest, the PDP-led government is punishing people of Kashmir for no fault of theirs,” he added.

He asked the government to come clear on the figures of power import from the Northern Grid this year. “Every year, the state has to buy electricity from the Northern Grid as local generation decreases during winter months. Why wasn’t state government ready this year?” he asked.
