Rohtak, July 6

The Rohtak Range police authorities have adopted several crime-prone villages to prevent crime by involving youths in sports, socio-cultural and spiritual activities,” said Rohtak Range IGP Shrikant Jadhav. The drive also envisages checking the abuse of liquour, smoking and consumption of narcotic drugs amongst the youth.

Jadhav told The Tribune that apart from channelising the energy of the youth towards social and developmental activities, the initiative would also help them explore collective career opportunities like forming job-oriented self-help groups at the village level and cooperatives in clusters of villages.

Six villages in four districts of the Rohtak Range have been identified for adoption. The district SPs have also been roped in to monitor the campaign and ensure its success.

Jadhav launched the village-adoption drive for the first time in 2007-08 when he was the SSP of Jhajjar by adopting Mandothi, a village infamous for crime. “With persistent efforts, the village got transformed into a positive and peaceful habitation,” he recalls.

The IGP recently convened a meeting of the DSPs concerned, who have been made nodal officers of the campaign. Representatives of the Brahmakumaris, Art of Living and the Bharat Vikas Parishad also participated.

The villages identified for adoption include Nara and Hathwala in Panipat district, Bhathgaanv in Sonepat, Siddhipur Lauva in Jhajjar and Bohar and Ismaila in Rohtak district. The SPs concerned have been directed to constitute teams comprising well-educated, courteous and capable police officials, including women officials, to coordinate the campaign.
