Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh today reiterated that the party would go ahead with the policy of “one family one ticket” in the forthcoming Assembly elections. He said the decision had been taken keeping in view the larger interests of the party.

He said he understood the concerns of some families which might be affected by the decision. “But in the larger interests of the party this is the minimum we can do,” he said, citing his own case where his wife Preneet Kaur and son Raninder Singh will not be contesting.

The former CM said: “We accuse Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal of political nepotism, with so many members of his family holding prominent positions. We thus cannot indulge in a similar practice.”

Amarinder said the policy would help them rope in more people, particularly the youth. He said this would also encourage the next generation to take part in the electoral process in a big way.
