Hundreds of students in the Adampur constituency have been left in the lurch, with the industrial training institute (ITI) in the constituency having been closed.

While the institute started last year during the Akali regime, Adampur MLA Pawan Kumar Tinu had visited the institute some days ago after word got out that it had been closed.

Meanwhile, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Sukhwinder Singh Kotli has demanded that if the institute isn’t restarted by Monday, the party activists shall hold a dharna in the area. While 150 admissions had been made in the ITI last year, this year, the ITI was decided to be closed six months ago, which has been termed as a betrayal to students by area residents.

State activist of the BSP Sukhwinder Singh Kotli said with the ITI, thousands of students would have received an opportunity to get vocational education. But due to the approach of the Congress government, and due to its plan to deliberately rob students of education, the future of many students has been adversely affected.

“All opposition parties have been taking up the issue. It is a gross injustice to students. The college admitted 150 students last year. This year even a single student hasn’t been admitted and the government quietly closed the institute some months ago. The staff at the institute was deliberately done away with slowly, with very few staff members left.

Warning the Congress government, Kotli said the college should be started immediately. He said the BSP leadership had prepared a strategy regarding the same and would stage a protest if the institute doesn’t resume classes. He said if the government plays with students’ future, it wouldn’t be tolerated at any cost.
