Hosts Sangrur bag overall team c’ship

LUDHIANA: Hosts Sangrur secured 117 points to bag the overall team championship while four new meet records were shattered in the 42nd edition of the Senior Punjab State Swimming Championship-2019 for Men and Women that concluded at the War Heroes Stadium swimming pool, Sangrur, on Sunday.

Hosts Sangrur secured 117 points to bag the overall team championship while four new meet records were shattered in the 42nd edition of the Senior Punjab State Swimming Championship-2019 for Men and Women that concluded at the War Heroes Stadium swimming pool, Sangrur, on Sunday.

In the men’s section, Sangrur district accumulated 72 points to emerge winners and Hoshiarpur district got 27 points to finish as runners-up.

Mohali district garnered 105 points to romp home champions in the women’s section while Jalandhar district with 26 points secured the second position.

Meanwhile, four new meet records were established on the second and final day of the championship as Sangrur and Mohali districts shared the honours, creating two records each.

Deepali Attri from Sangrur, who rewrote two records yesterday, went on to setting another meet record today. Today, in the 200-m individual medley event, she clocked 02:50.59 seconds to shatter the previous record of 02:53.46 seconds set by her city-mate Mankiran Kaur in 2009.

Sangrur quartet of Harnimrat, Joban, Deepali and Simran took 01:53.86 seconds to put to eclipse the existing record in the 4 x 50-meter free style relay mixed event. They improved upon the earlier record of 01:54.10 seconds set by Sangrur last year.

Third meet record was shattered by Chahat Arora from Mohali. Yesterday, she had created a new record in the 200-meter breast stroke. Chahat added another record against her name on Sunday as she completed 100-meter breast stroke in 01.18:67 seconds against the nine years old record of 01.24:68 seconds set by Mankiran Kaur of Sangrur.

Mohali swimmers created fourth meet record in the current edition of the championship when team comprising Jasnoor Kaur, Varnika, Vanshika and Arshpreet Kaur clocked 05.25:06 seconds to rewrite a new record in the 4 x 100-m medley relay event. The previous record of 05.26:09 seconds stood in the name of Ludhiana district.

Balraj Sharma, vice-president, Swimming Federation of India, gave away prizes to the winners. The office-bearers of the host body, Sangrur District Swimming Association, along with those from other district associations were present at the prize distribution function.

Final days’ results

  • Men 200-m free style: Harnimrat Singh Bhinder from Sangrur stood first, Anmol Jindal from Ludhiana second and Suryansh Sharma from Hoshiarpur third.
  • 100-m backstroke: Jobanpreet Singh from Sangrur stood first, Abhishek Kumar Rana from Ropar second and Rajwinder Singh from Sangrur third.
  • 100-m butterfly stroke: Uday Sharma from Hohsaipur stood first, Anmol Jindal from Ludhiana second and Updesh Singh from Ropar third.
  • 1,500-m free style: Suryansh Sharma from Hoshiarpur stood first, Sharandeep Singh from Sangrur second and Adil Saluka from Patiala third.
  • 200-m individual medley: Vishal Sharma from Amritsar stood first, Mridul Punia from Punjab Police second and Harsimar Singh from Mohali third.
  • 4x100 medley relay: Sangrur stood first, Amritsar second and Jalandhar third.
  • 100-m free style: Harnimrat Singh Bhinder from Sangrur stood first, Arun Guleria from Jalandhar second and Mridul Punia from Punjab Police third.
  • 100-m breaststroke: Harnimrat Singh Bhinder from Sangrur stood first, Vishal Sharma from Amritsar second and Harsimar Singh from Mohali third.
  • 4x50-m freestyle relay mixed: Sangrur stood first, Jalandhar second and Mohali third.
