Ludhiana, Patiala lads win handball matches

LUDHIANA: Hosts Ludhiana besides Patiala began their campaign with victories in handball (boys U-19) on the opening day of the 63rd Punjab Schools Inter-District Games being organised by the Punjab Education Department at the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Punjab Agricultural University campus, here today.

Hosts Ludhiana besides Patiala began their campaign with victories in handball (boys U-19) on the opening day of the 63rd Punjab Schools Inter-District Games being organised by the Punjab Education Department at the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Punjab Agricultural University campus, here today.

Ludhiana scored an emphatic win (38-21) over Kapurthala, while Patiala survived a scare before romping home winners against Mansa with a narrow margin of two points 14-12.

In other matches, Jalandhar overpowered Sangrur 20-16; Bathinda got the better of Ferozepur 23-13; Ropar drubbed Fatehgarh Sahib 25-4; Ludhiana beat Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar 28-15; Barnala trounced Gurdaspur 16-4; Faridkot defeated Muktsar 18-5; Moga outplayed Fazilka 17-9; Sangrur outclassed Hoshiarpur 17-8; Bathinda outperformed Tarn Taran 18-11 and Hoshiarpur beat Fatehgarh Sahib 12-7 to advance into the second round.

Bikram Bhanot, Assistant Education Officer, Ludhiana, inaugurated the games. Malvinder Singh, Rachhpal Singh, Harjeet Singh, Roop Singh, Dalvinder Singh, Jaspreet Singh, Deepak, Bhupinder Singh, Gurvinder Singh and Sukhwinder Singh were among others present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, the competition in carom started at BVM, Senior Secondary School, Kitchlu Nagar, in which Faridkot beat Fazilka in the boys’ U-19 category, whereas in boys’ U-17 group, Fazilka beat Barnala; Muktsar beat Sangrur and in the U-14 section, Muktsar beat Sangrur, Moga beat Barnala and Fazilka beat Ludhiana.
