The CBI today accepted Punjab government's recommendation and registered three cases in the sacrilege incidents in the state.

These cases do not include the police firing at protesters that led to the death of two persons. The state had not recommended a CBI inquiry into that incident.

The central agency would investigate three FIRs lodged in Fardikot district. The first case relates to FIR No. 63 about the theft of a ‘bir’ of Guru Granth Sahib from a gurdwara at Burj Jawahar Singh Wala village, a sacrilege that had triggered many similar incidents.

The second FIR (No. 117) dated September 25 was on the mystery behind certain posters pasted in the same village using objectionable language against the holy book.

The third FIR (No. 128) dated October 12 is about the recovery of torn pages of Guru Granth Sahib at Bargari village. A spokesperson for the Punjab Police said the CBI had reregistered these FIRs as regular cases and a team of the central agency would visit Faridkot.

The Centre issued a notification on the CBI inquiry earlier this month. The police spokesperson said the department would provide the required logistical support and cooperation to the CBI in the probe.
