Newspapers in England and in India

ACCORDING to the Morning Post the Premier recently addressed the Unionist War Committee in defence of his appointment of newspaper proprietors to ministerial posts and the Committee, thereupon, passed a hearty vote of thanks to him. That is what they do in England. In India newspaper proprietors, except in a few fortunate cases, are treated on the same footing with that most detested class, the editors of newspapers, and in some provinces they are constantly sent for, not by heads or even members of Government, but by district magistrates and divisional commissioners and lectured as to what their papers should or should not do. In some cases men of this class are actually sent for in preference to editors for the extra-ordinary reason that it is far easier to somjao them than to somjao editors of newspapers. All this because newspapers are the foremost organ through which the struggling spirit of national freedom finds expression.
