As many as 15 cows died at Sri Bal Gopal Gaushala located on the Dabwali road near the Sirsa level crossing on Thursday afternoon in the city.
Employees working there told the management about the incident. Thereafter, the Animal Husbandry Department was informed.
A team of six doctors, along with other staff, reached there and they started treatment of other cows feeling unwell.
As the district administration got to know about the incident, SDM Balwinder Singh and tehsildar Sukhbir Singh Brar and SHO of the Canal Colony police station Parvinder Singh with a police party reached the spot.
Others regular visitors to the gaushala also came after getting information.
Sri Gaushala Committee general secretary Sadhu Ram Kusla said around 11 am, people came and gave feed to the cows.
This is a routine affair as people usually come to offer fodder to the cows, but around 12.30 am, cows started falling down, he added.
Kusla said all cows which died were pregnant, and these were kept in a different shed.
Animal Husbandry Department deputy director Dr Sheetal Jindal said they had taken samples of the feed and fodder and now post-mortem of these cows would be conducted and exact reason behind the death would be ascertained.
However, after initial inspection, it seems that these cows died after eating poisonous feed.
A team of five doctors has been constituted for post-mortem.
SHO Parminder Singh said they had started a probe into the incident, but further action would be initiated after the post-mortem report is out.
Mayor Balwant Rai Nath also reached the gaushala and talked to members of the management about the incident. Other social activists also reached at the gaushala.
