Taking his fourth political plunge in five years, former Haryana Congress president Ashok Tanwar today joined the BJP, hailing PM Modi’s “transformational leadership”.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who accompanied Tanwar for the joining at the BJP’s headquarters here, described the 48-year-old as his nephew and termed the induction “significant for BJP’s expansion plans in Haryana”.

Khattar calls him nephew

CM Manohar Lal Khattar, who accompanied Tanwar for the joining at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, described the 48-year-old as his nephew. “Ashok’s mother and I come from the same village,” he said. He termed the induction “significant for BJP’s expansion plans in Haryana”.

“Ashok’s mother and I come from the same village. By that logic, he is my nephew,” he said. The CM also recalled past “insults” of Tanwar, who, he claimed, had been assaulted by Congress workers. The reference was to the 2016 episode in which Tanwar and former Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s supporters had clashed, with the former sustaining injuries.

Saying that he was elated to join the BJP on the eve of the Ram Temple inauguration, Tanwar said Modi had transformed the country in 10 years, unified it, improved the lives of the poor and elevated India’s global stature. “By 2047, India will be at the zenith of its glory. We will work to ensure we break all records in the Lok Sabha poll and the BJP crosses the 400-seat mark,” he said.

Later in the day, he met BJP chief JP Nadda.
