HPU accused of irregularities

The SFI has accused the Himachal Pradesh University of not following the roster system in the appointment of professors and assistant professors. The students’ body has alleged that the 200-point roster system prepared for these appointments is being completely ignored. Alleging that no committee has been formed to sort the forms, the SFI demanded that this responsibility be given to university professors.

The SFI also alleged that the posts were advertised in just one newspaper, as against the established norm of advertsing in three newspapers. SFI state secretary Amit Thakur said as per the August 25 notification of the Central Education Ministry, no appointments could be made until the situation returned to normal. However, he alleged, the HPU was ignoring all these instructions to induct the candidates of its choice. He said the SFI would launch an agitation if the university did not explain its position in a day.

Affordable Internet sought

Many parent-teacher associations in Palampur have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding affordable internet packages for students during the pandemic. Students of HP Agriculture University have also made a similar request with the University Grants Commission. They quoted the example of countries like Bangladesh who have introduced free internet packages for university students to enable them to attend online classes. These bodies have also demanded grants or soft loans for students who need to buy smartphones to access online classes. “Many educational institutions are conducting online academic activities but it has become difficult for many students to bear the internet expenses,” said representatives of these associations.

Virtual Teachers’ Day celebrated

Students of Army Public School, Dagshai, celebrated virtual Teachers’ Day by organising a cultural programme on the occasion. A prayer for the well-being of teachers was held, followed by showcase of clippings in which students highlighted the characteristics of each staff member. An assortment of dances based on old and new Hindustani songs and an English number were other highlights. Solo dances, poetry recitation and a speech to thank staff members were also held. Principal SK Mishra said, “Teachers exist because of you and there is no life in your absence. All are praying here for an early exit of the coronavirus and your return to the school.’’
