Hailstorm that lashed various parts of Kapurthala here today damaged crops and a vegetable nursery leaving growers distressed.
Harnek Singh, a farmer from Kulliya village near Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala, who provides seedlings of almost 15 vegetables prepared in 3 acres of his vegetable nursery, claimed to have suffered losses worth lakhs.
Harnek, who prepares seedlings of broccoli, capsicum, green chilli, onion, tomato, etc., said: “Hailstorm caused damage in entire 3 acres. It is a huge loss. I don’t know how I will bear it”.
Bhupinder Singh, a farmer from Tarfa Haji village, said there was a massive damage to fodder crop in the area.
“Farmers, who had sown late potato varieties, also suffered losses. Leaves of cauliflower also suffered some damage,” the growers said.
Balwinder Singh, a potato grower from Hazipur village in Kapurthala, said he had sown late variety of potato on 50 acres. “Around 60 per cent of the crop has been damaged. Damage to this extent has been reported after a long time,” the farmer claimed.
The growers said it would be difficult for them to make up with the losses.
