Jalandhar, April 15
Punjab Transport Minister Laljeet Singh Bhullar on Friday conducted a surprise check of buses, their permits and other documents here. Four buses were impounded for flouting rules besides imposing fine on another four and seizing registration certificate of two buses. The impounded vehicles also included buses from the Henry family-owned Kartar Bus Service.
The checks were conducted near Rama Mandi beneath the flyover at the place, which acts as a stopover for buses and further up the road near PAP. The minister was accompanied by AAP leader Surinder SIngh Sodhi and Mahila wing chief Rajwinder Kaur, along with AAP members and local officers.
The minister started checking of buses near Bidhipur railway crossing and Rama Mandi Chowk, where he found four buses violating permit rules, three of Kartar Bus Service and one of Padda Transport Co., Gurdaspur. The minister also imposed a fine of Rs 54,000 on Sehgal Vashisht Bus Service of Patiala, Rs 10,000 on Kapurthala-based bus company and Rs 2,000 each on Rajdhani Bus, Hoshiarpur, and Popular Roadways. The registration certificates of two buses — Doaba Roadways and Patiala Bus Highways — were seized.
Three of the impounded buses belong to the Kartar Bus Service, which is owned by the family of Congress MLA Bawa Henry.
Giving a strict warning to those evading tax or running buses without proper documentation, the minister said such practices would no longer be tolerated as the checking drive was to be intensified in days to come and none would be spared violating transport norms.
