Co-president Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Punjab, Balbir Singh accused the Congress government in Punjab of lacking political will to break the nexus between drug peddlers, police and political bigwigs, who were freely supplying drugs to the youth through their network. He demanded a CBI inquiry into the whole drug trade to unearth the real culprits and put them behind bars.

Balbir Singh was addressing a meeting of party volunteers on Shingaar Cinema Road here on Sunday evening. He claimed that drugs, particularly heroin, had taken a large section of Punjabi youth into its grip and thousands of families had been ruined. Singh said drug eradication was one of the main promises made by the Congress party before elections with Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh himself swearing to completely eliminate the menace from Punjab in four weeks.

“But after the passage of more than a year, no concrete step has been taken in this direction. Now, the Special Task Force formed by Captain Amarinder Singh himself has submitted its report, but the government was sitting on it, which reflects the real intensions of the government,” he said.

He said AAP would launch a special drive against drugs and special groups would be formed to nab people involved in the trade. A dedicated helpline number would also be circulated among people to give secret information about these anti-social elements. Balbir Singh said the Congress government had completely disappointed the people, as it proved to be a failure on all fronts, including farm loan waiver, jobs to youth and to control sand mafia.

Later, he held a march up to Samrala Chowk to create awareness against drug abuse.  State general secretary Ahbaab Grewal, spokesperson Darshan Singh Shankar also addressed the meeting.
