Chandigarh, January 21
Though night temperatures prevailing over the region have witnessed a slight increase over the past few days, no respite is expected in the coming days from the cold wave and foggy conditions sweeping across North India.
“Dense to very dense fog and cold day to severe cold day conditions likely will continue for the next 4-5 days,” a bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department on Sunday said.
Cold wave conditions were likely to prevail over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh during the next 3-4 days, the bulletin added, with a departure of up to nine degrees below normal being experienced in day temperatures.
During the past 24 hours, the maximum temperatures in Punjab ranged from 11.1 degrees Celsius at Pathankot to 15 degrees Celsius at Patiala, with the highest deviation across the state being 9.2 degrees below normal at Bathinda.
The minimum temperatures in the state were in the range of 3.1 degrees Celsius at SBS Nagar to 8.7 degrees Celsius at Faridkot. The departure from normal ranged from minus 1.4 degrees C to 3.6 degrees C.
In Haryana, the maximum temperatures during this period ranged from 10.9 degrees Celsius at Mewat to 17 degrees Celsius at Narnaul. Day temperatures were below normal by up to 5.4 degrees C.
“Both states have remained dry, with cold wave conditions prevailing at some places in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana along with dense to very dense fog over many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi.
Jet stream winds of the order of 140-160 knots (260-300 kmph) at 12,600 metres above the mean sea level are prevailing over the plains, leading to subsidence of cold air and enhancing cold wave and cold day conditions. Similar intensity of jet stream is likely to continue during next 3-4 days, IMD said.
Under its influence, cold day to severe cold day conditions are very likely to continue in some parts of Punjab and Haryana till January 23 and cold day conditions in some places on January 24-25, with no significant change in minimum temperatures being expected over northern parts during the next five days.
