Patiala, January 13
As the sun briefly peeked through the clouds on Saturday, offering a short-lived reprieve to those celebrating Lohri across the state, meteorological experts warned that the region would continue to grapple with a relentless cold wave in the coming days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Punjab and parts of Haryana, anticipating severe cold conditions.
Scientist at Chandigarh Meteorological Centre, Shivinder Singh, emphasised that severe cold conditions are expected to persist for a few more days, with the maximum temperature in parts of Punjab expected to decline.
Singh noted that this marks the second occurrence of extreme cold wave conditions in the region over the past two years, with day temperatures plummeting 6 to 7 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature has also hovered around 8°C.
“Dense or very dense fog, coupled with extremely windy and cold conditions, is anticipated in the coming days,” Shivinder Singh cautioned.
In Patiala, the maximum temperature was recorded at 12.5°C, which is 6°C below the normal range. The minimum temperature was 5.4°C, one degree less than the usual. The weather forecast indicates that the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 12°C on January 14, with the minimum temperature remaining around 4°C.
Amritsar and Jalandhar experienced the coldest conditions in the state on Saturday, with a maximum temperature of 11°C.
Meanwhile, Ludhiana recorded a maximum temperature of 13°C. These temperatures indicate the severity of the ongoing cold wave in the region.
