The move of the Education Department to hold a sports meet for their teachers has been hailed by the community in the city.
The event is going to take place at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) and the Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan from December 26-28.
The sporting event is not restricted to physical education teachers but all subject teachers can take part in it. The teachers shall be taking part in multiple games like football, kho-kho, athletics and chess among many. Ashwani Kumar a teacher at Government Senior Secondary School, Gehrimandi, said, “It is a brilliant move that games are being held for teachers. Healthy teachers shall be able to teach their students in a better way. ”
Even though the state government is keen on promoting health of the teachers through holding sports activity, there are plenty of posts for physical teachers lying vacant.
Keshav Kohli, president of the Unemployed PTI, Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed) Master of Physical Education (M.P.Ed Union, said, “It is a great idea to promote sports among teaching community. It is going to motivate teachers and students too. However, the department must fill in posts of physical education teachers to make a healthy state.”
He said it was a good step and it was a pending demand of teachers.
All other departments hold annual sports meet for their employees. It is an encouraging step by the department. It will also help boost sports infrastructure in the primary schools. If teachers gain knowledge about particular game, it will help them to prepare students, said Pankaj, a high school teacher.
