Amritsar, February 20
Teachers, upset over pending promotions, have called out the Education Department for its poor policy-making. The district unit of Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF), in line with its Punjab chapter, claimed that several teachers with more than 10-13 years of service, have not been given any promotion despite being eligible. “They are on the verge of retirement; some of them have been living on meagre salaries and are highly qualified. This is gross injustice,” said Ashwani Awasthi, DTF state finance secretary and district unit head.
The DTF has raised these issues previously with the department and received a letter of invitation for a meeting with the Education Minister on February 28 at Punjab Bhavan, Chandigarh. Meanwhile, 5994 ETT and 1158 assistant professors also participated in sit-ins held at Education Minister Harjot Bains’ village and demanded that the recruitment process be completed.
Awasthi said that ETT recruitments have been relegated to the back-burner by the Education Department. Pending promotion of Master Cadre teachers to lecturer, headmaster, principals and pending promotions of non-teaching cadres are also waiting for approval, causing a financial loss to the eligible candidates. “Instead of taking up the cases of teachers, who are deprived of annual proficiency promotion, the Education Department is deliberately ignoring the matter,” said Awasthi.
