Moving beyond confines of galleries, art seems to have reached out to people at places designed to catch the public’s attention. An initiative by a group of artists from the city, headed by art critic and director of KT Kala, Brajesh Jolly, a Wall of Art has been created inside the Trillium shopping mall.

Displaying 70 miniature paintings, the 16 feet wide and 10 feet tall wall has been erected inside the mall as a part of art promotion.

“We had invited 70 artists from the region on the International Women’s Day to create paintings on the theme coinciding with the theme of women empowerment. These works were then displayed on the Wall of Art, a concept to let art reach out to public as more visibility means increased art appreciation,” said Brajesh Jolly, who came up with the idea. Jolly had earlier designed a similar wall at Alpha One mall in the city that displays 20 miniature paintings and biographical art work of five celebrated names of Amritsar-born legends – Dara Singh, Rajesh Khanna, Mohd Rafi, Shaheed Udham Singh and Madan Lal Dhingra.

“The idea is to provide a space for city’s homegrown artists and is an attempt to amalgamate art with our lifestyle. A shopping mall, where one goes to enjoy, can easily become a place to catch up some contemporary and traditional art,” said Jolly.

“So, while most laze around on the idea of spending a Sunday afternoon at an art show as visiting a shopping mall sounds better, bringing the art to the shopping mall itself is effective promotion,” he adds.
