The Chandigarh Administration has started a project to bring down the level of roads across the city to prevent flooding during the rainy season.

A source said the Department of Engineering had roped in the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), Delhi, to study how the level of the roads could be brought down to prevent floods.

An official of the department said the level of the city roads had increased over the years due to re- carpeting at regular intervals.

He said, “Due to the increased level of roads, rainwater gets accumulated and water flows into markets and houses, causing floods.”

Mukesh Anand, Special Secretary-cum-Chief Engineer of the department, said the CRRI team had started the study from Madhya Marg, which mostly faced a flood-like situation during the rainy season.

He said the team of scientists would investigate the road crust and submit a report. It would suggest the best modern technology to bring down the level of roads.

He said the project would start from Madhya Marg. Later, other roads would be included.
