As part of rehabilitation and revenue generation, Patiala Central Jail Administration, opened a canteen-cum-cafeteria at Patiala Central Jail, here on Friday. Jail Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa inaugurated the canteen-cum-cafeteria. The eatery is situated near the main gate of the jail. 

During the inauguration, the minister said depending on the success of the project, it would be implemented in other jails as well. The minister said the income generated from the eatery would be utilised to improve the facilities for inmates only.

This initiative of cafeteria cum-canteen programme was a brainchild of Patiala Central Jail administration. Rajan Kapur, Jail Superintendent, Patiala Central Jail said, “Many people used to request for jail food, but I would turn down their request. However, with this initiative, people now can have jail food easily.”

The cafe, to be supervised by the jail staff, will have lassi, samosa, sweets, Verka and Markfed products - also a vegetarian thali on the menu. Interestingly, the food prepared by the jail inmates will be available for the common people also. A complete thali would cost Rs 90. 

The minister tasted the food prepared by the jail inmates. The minister also inspected the facilities provided to the jail inmates after he held a meeting with the jail staff over improving the facilities for jail Inmates.

While taking to the media persons, Randhawa said, “Our government has been able to brought substantial reforms in the jails. We have been able to put an end to the hooliganism culture in the jails.”
