Traders hail end of truck unions

CHANDIGARH:The C&F Association, Zirakpur, has hailed Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amaridner Singh’s announcement to abolish truck unions.

Chandigarh, June 21

The C&F Association, Zirakpur, has hailed Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amaridner Singh’s announcement to abolish truck unions. “This is a historic move, which alone would lead to a voluminous increase in trade and industry in the state,” association president Amit Jain said.

He said a truck union did not mean only high freight rates but total inefficiency too. “The unions are totally inefficient in providing trucks in time and took no responsibility of any shortage or damage of goods in transit. They never met any transit time commitments nor had any network or feedback mechanism for sending goods to far off destinations, ” Jain highlighted.

He further stated that as a practice, manufacturer or trader would use a truck from the Union to the shortest possible distance and then transfer the stocks to some other regular transporter’s truck which provided more efficient and time-bound services. However, this process resulted in much higher costs and longer transit time.— TNS
