Vijay Divas: War widows, ex-servicemen honoured

A function was organised to mark Vijay Divas at the Mini-secretariat here today.

War widows, retired Army personnel and other invitees were present. Deputy Commissioner KM Pandurang honoured 17 war widows, three war disables, three dependent children of martyrs and two Sena Medal awardees and handed over cheques to them. Pandurang said to look after the welfare of ex-servicemen and their dependents, district soldiers’ boards had been set up in each district. The board implements various schemes formulated by the government.

Major Tilak Raj, vice-president, district soldiers’ board, also paid tributes to martyrs and assured the ex-servicemen and their dependents that they would get every possible assistance from the board officials. Captain Sanjay Sikka, president, Kaithal District Ex-servicemen League, and other officials were present on the occasion. Schoolchildren presented patriotic songs.

Kurukshetra: Vijay Divas was celebrated at the rest house of Zila Sainik Board here today in memory of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

Paying tributes to the warriors and martyrs, Kurukshetra Deputy Commissioner CG Rajnikanthan said their sacrifice was a source of inspiration for the youth. “Every Indian is proud of the soldiers who laid down their lives for the country. As many as 2,473 soldiers were killed and 6,661 injured in the war,” he said.

He directed board secretary to arrange a meeting so that the problems of the ex-servicemen, widows of the martyr and their family members could be resolved.

Seven soldiers of Kurukshetra district had shown bravery during the war. As many as 23 martyr families were given a cheque of Rs 1,000 each on the occasion.
