Chandigarh, June 9

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh today announced that he would screen the uncensored version of ‘Udta Punjab’ at Majitha in Amritsar district on June 17, the movie’s scheduled date of release.

Majitha assembly constituency is represented by Punjab Cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia.

Comparing Majitha with Mexico, Amarinder described both places as the epicentre of the drug trade.

Amarinder has written to the movie’s producers, Anurag Kashyap and Ekta Kapoor, urging them to provide uncensored copies of the film.

The former Chief Minister said the purpose of screening the movie in Majitha was to tell the Akalis and the BJP that he would expose the truth at any cost.

The PPCC chief added, “I will take the entire responsibility of the legal implications, if any, for screening the uncensored version as we want the truth to be told, no matter what the price.”

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Ambika Soni said the ‘Udta Punjab’ controversy proved that the Centre and the Punjab government would do everything to mislead the people of the state.

“The Modi government’s tall claims of freedom of speech and expression seem to have hit a wall. The essential purpose of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is certification, not censorship. In a bid to placate its political masters, the chair of the CBFC is suppressing the creative voice of cinematic expression,” said Soni.
