Spouses turned business partners is not a very common sight but it surely is gaining momentum. There are many couples in the city who are living their startup dream together. We got in touch with some such couple-preneurs to know how they make it work.

Striking the balance

Copperpod IP is a company that provides research and forensics for patent litigation cases across Europe and the US. It’s the brainchild of Rahul and Purva Vij who left the US to generate employment in their hometown. And this couple says, “Working with a spouse can be quite rewarding as well as disorienting. You can play off each other’s strengths and cover more ground. Plus working together makes couples respect each other and their individual capabilities even more. On the downside, couples that work together often end up disturbing the balance of work and private life.”

Towards a common goal

Ravi Sharma and Vinika is another couple that is standing strong in the world of start-ups. They’ve been running Webomaze since 2014. “I had an idea of starting a company since long and when I looked for a COO, Vinika was the best fit because I always found her to be a process-oriented person,” Ravi avers. And they say running a business with a spouse does have its advantages. “When you work together, you are actually working on a common goal.”

Sharing responsibility

Sumit and Ina Dhingra run Trooking, a startup working towards adding the unexplored element in travel packages. For these lovers turned spouses turned business partners, working together was a reason to prepone their marriage. This does sounds almost too good to be true, but they say, “We’ve known each other for over 14 years and we shared a common interest of travel. When time came to start working on it, we didn’t want to let go of even day.

Similarly different

Another couple that has been running a startup successfully since 2013 is Priyadeep Kaur and Sukhmeet Singh. One of the essentials to making the professional relationship work is for both partners to have skills that complement.

Albeit couples get to spend more time together in such a set up and no doubt these couple-preneur partnerships have struck a sweet note, but it also calls for being committed to the good and bad when living an enterprise 24x7.
