The maths exam for Matriculation conducted by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) left students confused as a question worth four marks was missing in the English version of the paper.

The three sets of maths question papers included 04/A, 04/B, & 04/C. In the set 04/C question No. 22 was missing in the English version of the paper. The question was not printed in the English version while it was there in Hindi and Punjabi versions of the paper.

Students appearing in English version of maths exam were a harried lot as the four marks question was missing in papers provided to them by the staff posted at the examination centres. It created confusion among students as they did know how to solve the question in Hindi or Punjabi.

Students have urged the PSEB authorities to compensate them by allowing four grace marks at the time of evaluation of their answer sheets.

Controllers of different examination centres said they had brought the discrepancy into notice of the authorities in the examination branch of the PSEB.

Referring to information received from students appearing in examination at MGMN Senior Secondary School, Ravinder Jit Puri, deputy superintendent, admitted that question No. 22 was missing in code 40/C set English verison papers.

“Though statements of the question were available in Hindi and Punjabi versions of the papers, we were not authorised to make any changes in English version of the said set,” Puri said while maintaining that some English medium students had reportedly tried to attempt the question by taking help from Hindi and Punjabi versions of the maths paper.

Parents of the affected students have urged the authorities in Education Department to compensate by allowing special grace marks to those, who could not attempt question No. 22 of the code 40/C set of the paper.

The controller of the examination centre at MGMN Senior Secondary School, Viney Kumar, said the issue had been brought into notice of the authorities concerned in the board through proper channel.

“We demand that full marks should be given for this left out question as this has created confusion among students,” said Rajinder Sharma, president, Association of the Punjab School Education Board Affiliated Schools.
