Guwahati, April 14
Assam Congress legislator Rumi Nath was today arrested for her alleged links with the kingpin of an international car-theft racket, Anil Chauhan. She has been remanded in one-day police custody.
Rumi Nath had allegedly recommended a car pass to Anil Chauhan to enter the high-security premises of the Assam Legislative Assembly and the MLA Hostel campus. Anil was arrested by the city police on April 3.
Guwahati Police Commissioner Jyotirmoy Chakravarty said Rumi Nath was arrested from her official quarter on the Assembly Hostel campus, following which she was taken to the Dispur police station. She was arrested in connection with two cases registered at two police stations - Dispur and Azara - in which Anil Chauhan was already arrested last week.
The police, meanwhile, have frozen 17 bank accounts of Anil Chauhan, with joint commissioner Nawab Haque indicating that more people are likely to be arrested.
The Congress MLA from the Barkhola constituency in Cachar district, Rumi was allegedly evading arrest. She had also applied for an anticipatory bail which was turned down by the Gauhati High Court on Friday.
