Cholera and Overcrowding

DR. Turner, the late Health Officer of Bombay, has, in his report on the cholera epidemic, stated that it was chiefly among the poorer classes of the people in parts of the city which were overcrowded and insanitary. There was nothing wrong with the water supply. He writes:—“It is not necessary to repeat what has been said so often about the spread of the disease by personal contact once it is introduced into overcrowded and insanitary areas, but it is well borne out by the epidemic’s course and the effect the mill-hand strike had on the increase of the disease, and the resultant drop a few days after they went to work.”
