A man was killed and eight others of a family were injured after they were allegedly attacked by a group of people in the wee hours of today while they were sleeping in their tents on the Ambala-Jagadhri road in Saha. The deceased has been identified as Kesar (60).

The injured have been identified as Gobinda, Vijay, Pappu, Rekha, Rani, Meena, Heena and Guddi.

The victims alleged that around 10 people attacked them with a motive of robbery. The victims used to live in four tents and sell ayurvedic medicines on the roadside.

The injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantonment, from where they were referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. However, they went to a private hospital in Karnal.

It is being suspected that the miscreants came to Saha in a train and went back in another train.

On getting information, officials from the Saha police station and forensic expert Dr GR Jain visited the spot.

The family members had been living in this area for the past six months. It is being suspected that it could be the work of the Bawaria gang.

Chander Bhan, SHO of the Saha police station, said: “The motive behind the attack seems to be robbery. The suspects took away cash and jewellery worth over Rs 1 lakh. The number of robbers is suspected to be around 10 to 12. A case has been registered under Sections 459, 460 and 302 of the IPC and the matter is being investigated.”

Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Jorwal also reached the spot. Jorwal said: “The style of attack was similar to the Bawaria gang. The victims were living here for the past nearly six months. It is being suspected that the assailants had travelled in a train from the Kesri railway station. Efforts are being made to nab them.”
