Jammu, February 9

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has started screening of candidates for the two high-stakes Lok Sabha seats — Jammu and Udhampur -– on which it had consecutively won twice in 2014 and 2019 by a thumping margin.

While the frontrunner for Udhampur seat is Jitendra Singh who is the Union Minister and sitting MP from there, three names are doing the rounds for the Jammu seat, including sitting MP Jugal Kishore Sharma.

The search of candidates suitable for the two seats is under process after which a final decision will be taken by the high command, sources privy to the development have informed.

The names of former Mayor of Jammu Municipal Corporation, Rajinder Sharma, former state chief of BJP and former minister Sat Sharma as well as Jugal Kishore Sharma are likely to be included in the panel of candidates for the Jammu seat.

Sources informed that while a rival camp is trying to spread information that a new face would be introduced from Udhampur seat, “Jitendra Singh is most likely to be the face of the party from the seat because of his performance and huge victory margin over the Congress candidate in 2019 Lok Sabha polls”, a senior BJP leader informed.

Moreover, Jitendra Singh has maintained constant touch with the people of his constituency where many developmental projects have been completed.

The saffron party is likely to field a Dogra Brahmin face from Jammu seat and a Rajput face will continue to be the choice for the Udhampur constituency.

The BJP is leaving no stone unturned even before the announcement of the candidates. While the Opposition parties are still confused over the sharing of seats by the INDIA alliance before the poll, the BJP has started a campaign ‘Gaon Chalo Abhiyan’ to woo voters. More than 10,000 workers of the party will reach different rural and urban areas of the UT under the campaign from February 8 to 10.
