The journey of an actor can never stop, says Chhaya Kadam from the show Mere Sai

Why did you choose this role?

I have always chosen unconventional roles that stand out and contribute to the society in one way or the other. In the show, I am playing the character of a widow who has lost all hope in life. She accidently meets Sai and is able to get direction in life. The pain and sufferings of Saraswati and guidance of Sai baba have been the major reasons that have attracted me to this role.

As an artiste, do you feel the added responsibility while playing such characters?

As an artiste, every role comes with some responsibility! But when we work in a show like Mere Sai, the responsibility increases manifold. Another major reason that I feel extra responsible on being a part of this show is that my parents shared a very strong bond with Sai baba.

Tushar Dalvi and you belong to the same background of theatre. Have you ever worked together before?

Yes, Tushar and I belong to the same background in theatre, but we never got the opportunity to work together. This is the first time. I have seen his work and really admire his dedication to his character of Sai.

What is the relevance of this track in today’s time?

We need to understand the meaning of seva bhav. Today, we are using the teachings of Sai in a wrong way and to for our own benefit.

What changes do you find in the industry from the time you started?

From the time when I started acting, Marathi and Bollywood industries have evolved immensely. There is huge advancement in the technology sector. Movie makers are coming up with new topics and new ideas. But one thing that remains constant is the soul of the artiste.

How will define your career over the decade?

The journey is still on. An actor’s career is always moving from one place to another, from on life of a character to another. Their journey never stops.

You’ve worked in commercial and non-commercial projects as well. What kind of project intrigues you more?

I believe that cinema remains the same. And in the process of cinema the first thing that comes is the story followed by the role, which is the soul of cinema. Hence, commercial or non-commercial is all in the hands of the audience. But the effort and dedication is of the artiste.

As an actor do you still have the phobia of getting typecast?

Not at all. I am not afraid of any such thing.

Who has been your biggest inspiration?

My parents. I have learnt a lot from them and always aspire to learn more.

How has the pandemic changed your lifestyle?

The pandemic has not changed my life at all. It is all the same for me.
